Impact and Give Back: Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank

In South Louisiana, where vibrant communities thrive amid challenges, Second Harvest Food Bank stands as a lifeline for those facing hunger. Since its inception in 1982, the organization has been a powerful force in the fight against food insecurity, driven by its mission to provide food access, advocacy, education, and disaster response. What began as an initiative led by Archbishop Hannan and local leaders has grown into the state’s largest anti-hunger network, serving 23 parishes and countless lives.

At the heart of Second Harvest’s work are programs designed to meet diverse community needs. Through a network of over 500 partners, including food pantries, senior centers, and schools, the organization addresses hunger at every level. Programs like Summer Feeding, Kids Café, and the Backpack Program tackle child hunger, while Meals on Wheels and the Senior Commodity Box Program provide essential nutrition for seniors. In addition, innovative efforts like the Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market bring healthy food to underserved areas, addressing food deserts while promoting equity. Second Harvest even partners with local farmers and nutrition educators to prioritize wellness alongside hunger relief.
