The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative aims to combat heart disease, the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives annually than breast cancer or
any other condition. Launched in 2004, Go Red for Women raises awareness and empowers women to take control of their heart health, addressing gaps in awareness and clinical care.
Coretta LaGarde, Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Greater New Orleans, emphasizes the urgency
of the campaign. Nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with proper information and education, she explains. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a significant issue, with 45% of women aged 20 and older living with some form of CVD, often without awareness or action. Additionally, fewer than half of women entering pregnancy have optimal cardiovascular health, increasing their risk.
